Word of the day yesterday was HOT! I’m not sure all the reasons it felt even hotter than our last heat wave, but it looks like it’s going to stay warm through next week. I’m optimistic that this will mean we’ll have the first taste of ripe tomatoes in the shares. The cherry tomatoes in the you pick have started to ripen and I picked just a small handful of ripe tomatoes from our earliest varieties in the field last week. Summer squash and cucumbers will continue, as will lettuce and fresh onions. We’ll see if we can get some more carrots, although they’re one of a few crops that have been overtaken by the weeds with all of this hot weather so it’s tough to tell how much we’ll actually have of them. On the farm stand we should have a few more pole beans, eggplants, and maybe some chard. In the you pick the cherry tomatoes should be ripening, and the padron peppers have been producing, as well as the shiso, anise hyssop and many other herbs.
As evidenced by the lack of a field photo (which I never managed to take), yesterday was a busy day knocking back weeds, preparing beds for seeding fall and winter spinach, radishes and turnips, and of course irrigating! Keeping the crew watered was a serious job too, and one that our generous neighbors Golden Age Kombucha helped with by delivering cold drinks which were most appreciated! On the topic of our farm partners, Ello Farm has been delivering eggs for pick up at our CSA and they still have egg shares available.
