Summer Share #6

A little smaller one this week: kale, shallots, cucumbers, sweet onion, summer squash, butter lettuce. The kale is a new variety for us which has collard shaped leaves and we’ve planted especially for winter production, but are curious to see how it does in the summer too. So far it’s vigorous so that’s a good start. We continue to work our way through cleaning the French Grey shallots, which are a lot of work but are so tasty! As usual, there is a mix of cucumber and summer squash types we’re growing so it’s a bit random which ones you’ll see in your particular share. On the farm stand we had more romano beans, new (to us) Armenian cucumbers, eggplant and extra lettuces. Thursday’s share and farm stand should look similar, although with the cool weather we might not have much eggplant.

Cool, damp conditions were definitely noteworthy yesterday. This is a pretty typical weather pattern for the end of July/beginning of August and it was a nice break from the heat and dust. It also made a good day for planting and we planted the first big round of radicchio, as well as kohlrabi for the fall. Now to concentrate on all the little weed seedlings the drizzle is helping to germinate!
