Summer Share #5

Lettuce, summer squash, carrots, cucumbers, romano beans, sweet onion and parsley. The cucumbers, especially our Salt and Pepper white cucumbers are really starting to produce. We had a bit of chard as well as extras on the lettuce, beans, cucumbers and summer squash on the farm stand today. We’ll see how well the beans continue to produce on Thursday but the rest of the share should be the same, as well as the farm stand items.

It feels like we’re in a bit of a race to get beds prepared and planted for the fall crops, to knock back the weeds on some of the summer crops and to keep the weeds down in the new plantings. Today we managed to plant more lettuce, collards and fennel for the fall. There was just a bit of time for weeding. Thursday looks like it’ll be another big planting day so we’ll see how much time we have for the weeds then. It was really nice to have a cooler day after so many weeks of really hot weather. Fortunately we’ve been able to keep up on the irrigation. The only trouble there is that the crows have once again discovered that they love poking holes in our new drip tape. Turning on the irrigation that under normal circumstances takes less than five minute took over a half an hour this afternoon due to all of the holes that needed to be repaired.

Big thank you to the folks who came out on Sunday and helped clean up the weeds in the pepper planting. We were treated to some of the most impressive thunder I’ve heard in Portland, and even a couple of short showers, but even with those conditions the peppers look so much happier right now!
