Chard, summer squash, beets, green beans, fresh red onion, cucumber, lettuce and (not pictured) basil. A few additional notes on the shares: basil was in the Monday share but won’t be in the Thursday share as Thursday got basil last week; also like last Thursday, two heads of lettuce today but probably just one on this coming Thursday (the heat has been throwing off the lettuce a bit).
On both summer squash and cucumbers we’re growing a few different varieties. For summer squash there are currently two different zucchini, the lighter colored Genovese and the darker Mutabile and it’s random who gets what. Similarly on cucumbers we currently have the lighter Salt and Pepper, and the standard green slicer, Marketmore. As the season goes on expect to see patty pan squash, lemon cucumbers and another new cucumber which is new this year.
The beans have been doing well with the heat and our Romano pole beans should be ready on Thursday. Well might also still have some of the bush beans, although picking two different beans in one day is a stretch for the crew. Normally we try to spread out the two harvests but with the cool spring the bush beans are later than usual, and with the summer heat the pole beans are starting just a little earlier.
Yesterday in the field was a weed catch up day. We’re not completely caught up on those (and never will be), but we made some progress. Over the weekend two of our former farm crew came out of retirement to help us get all of the tomatoes trained. I love the community that has grown around the farm over the years. Look for another weekend work party announcement soon!
