Predictions for Summer Share #4

Thursday members got the first cucumbers today, as well as a bit of basil added to the shares. Both of those items should be in Monday’s share next week, as well as summer squash, green crisp lettuce, beets, chard and fresh onions. Tomatoes are coming soon, and more beans are on their way, too.

I tried to stuff too many projects into the day but it all worked out in the end. In addition to harvesting and packing the shares Sara was able to work on training the tomatoes to their string supports, and I spent a lot of the day behind our little two wheeled tractor mowing down weeds, and turning them into the ground to feed the next crops. At the very end of the day I managed to get a bunch of replacement plants in the ground for ones the crows have pulled up recently, as well as planting out the rutabagas for this winter. Catherine stayed late and helped me get two more plantings of lettuce in the ground. Sadly, I had to admit defeat on a planting of carrots that never really germinated well and got overtaken by weeds. More plantings to come though. The root parsley and salsify are also buried in weeds which I at least mowed down today in hopes that the crop plants will somehow now have a better chance. We’ll see if that works. Our weed pressure is really high this year so I’m trying to be proactive to reduce the weed seed population when things get out of hand.

The first egg shares from Ello Farm came tonight and they look great. I don’t think they’re looking for more sign ups at this point but they might still have a little capacity so check your email for the link if you want eggs but haven’t signed up yet. The first flower bouquet from Flower Magic also showed up – again, not sure if they’re looking for more sign ups, but the link is in old emails. And of course our neighbors at Golden Age Kombucha brought the good stuff which is always a treat!
