Predictions for Summer Share #2

Week one went well with fewer items than planned, but good size on the ones that did make it in! Having skipped early spring harvests I’m a little thrown off by the start of lettuce and kale season being with full sized heads and the turnips being something other than baby, but it’s also nice! Week two should see more lettuce (probably a butter head), a head of collards, beets, parsley, a few new potatoes, baby leeks and maybe some fava beans and the first of the summer squash.

Planting continues with more beets going in this past week and a few items like lettuce and the fall kale and chard planned for next week. Tomatoes and cucumbers are vying for our attention and need to be tied up. And of course the weeds are always needing attention. On Thursday we pulled the overwintered shallots which look like they did really well. Those will cure a bit before we give them out – one of my favorite alliums in recent years with such a unique flavor and character.

Next Thursday is July 4 and we’ll harvest and distribute as usual on that day. We still have a few shares available for sale, prices will be prorated at this point. The other folks who distribute at the farm do too – Cloud Cap Mushrooms, Golden Age Kombucha and Flower Magic Farm. I’m so happy to see the mushrooms back and the Kombucha is a great treat at the end of a long farm day! Eggs are in the works but won’t be here for a bit so stay tuned for more on that soon.
