Summer Share #1

We’re off to a good start with the predicted items in the share: red leaf lettuce, Lacinato Rainbow kale, fava greens, Hakurei turnips with greens, baby carrots and a first pinch of basil. Fava greens may not be familiar to all but basically they’re the tender tips from the tops of the fava plants and they taste very much like fava beans when cooked. My favorite way to eat them is chopped up and sautéed in olive oil. I’ll often toss them with pasta and pecorino romano cheese, or add a bit of balsamic vinegar at the end of the sauté. We’re pushing the season a bit late on these so they may need a bit more cooking to soften them up.

It was good to get back to harvesting today and the weather was very cooperative, not too hot, but pleasantly sunny in the afternoon once we had harvests in the shade. After a few months off from harvesting and packing shares it took a minute to remember all of the details of the flow, but even after that we had some time to knock back more weeds. The weeds are liking this weather at least as much as the crops in the field so there are no lack of them to knock back.

Even though we’ve had our first harvest there’s still time to get a summer share and we have three more to sell. The other folks distributing at the farm would also love to sell shares of mushrooms, kombucha and flowers so check our previous posts for links to details on those. On the farm stand this week we’ll have sample sizes of the kombucha if you’re not ready to commit with out trying it first. We should also have some extra lettuce and other items from the shares. Reports from the you-pick section was that there are lots of raspberries to pick so you might want to bring a container for those.
