Field Notes

We’ve been having enough rain and cool weather to keep the cover crops very happy! On Monday we got the peppers and eggplant in the ground, with fingers crossed that the cool nights don’t set them back too much and maybe a little warmth is on its way. Yesterday we got some herbs, tomatillos, and ground cherries planted in the you pick section. Sam from Vicolo Farm hopped on the BCS, mowed down some of that cover crop for us, mixed it in with the power harrow and then we covered with a tarp it to give the soil life a better shot at breaking it all down in the next four weeks before we plant that area. We took advantage of the rain we got mid-week and the forecasted rain for this weekend to skip a day of irrigation and concentrate on knocking back the weeds. We were able to get to hoeing almost all of the crops in the field, which at this point are numerous!

Next week we’ll pick up with planting again and it’s also time to start setting up the trellises for the pole beans. Summer CSA sign-ups continue to trickle in and we still have a few more spots available. I’m working on getting the add on share information from the other producers we’ve worked with the past, and we have an exciting new producer offering CSA pick ups at the farm this year – Golden Age Kombucha. They moved in across the street from the farm last year and this year they’re offering CSA pick up. You can sign up for a share directly on their website. It’s tasty stuff!
