Kale, lettuce, sweet peppers, onions, shallots, salad turnips, tomatoes, and celery. Lots of these items are probably done for the year after this share. This was the last planned lettuce share and we’ll have more next week but probably not after that. Sweet peppers and tomatoes have held on longer than planned, and if the weather stays as warm as it’s been they may continue a little longer, but I wouldn’t count on it. The onions are the last of the flat, yellow cipolla types, and the shallots are the last of the large, red shallots we grow. This was probably also the final celery harvest for the year, although we should have some celeriac later this fall. The salad turnips are just getting started and while they’re not very cold hardy, we should have another round of them before it gets too cold. The Kale will continue, although we have less of it than planned due to numerous pest issues so next week may see collards instead while we give the kale extra time to grow back.
We’ve gotten really lucky with Thursday weather this year and today was a lovely day to get some work done. Besides the harvest we were able to clean up some of the irrigation lines and do a bit of weeding in the kale and rutabagas, and a few other spots. That’s pretty much the field work schedule for the next few months: irrigation and trellis clean up, and knocking back the weeds to give the crops more air flow and light. It’s also just about time to start planning for next season so this is a great time to get any feedback you have on this season, in particular things you loved and changes or new crops you’d like to see next year.
