Once again yesterday I failed to take a field photo, busy day! But I knew I had this photo for a backup. I actually took last weekend when I was cleaning up a leftover share from the A schedule that had been sitting on the after hours table for a couple of days. I thought it might be interesting to post a photo of what the shares look like after a couple of days without refrigeration. The greens were all a little wilted, but everything was still mostly useable.
Definitely a few hiccups in the transition from summer to fall schedules, but nothing too major. One note from last weekend, when I was at the farm cleaning up I found a bit of human caused disturbance. We definitely had some winter squash taken from the hoop house where it was curing, and some of the corn torn down . Sam who we share the farm with at Vicolo Farm had a few plants torn out of the ground. We had a bunch of plants trampled, although that was quite possibly a dog – maybe connected? Who knows. Overall, considering how open the farm is we’ve definitely felt pretty lucky over the years to not have had more disturbance.
And the farm goes on, so for next week here’s what looks possible: Lettuce, kale, celery, shallots and cippolla onions, sweet peppers, and tomatoes. It’s possible we might have salad turnips or beets, they’re on their way but are sizing up slowly. Tomatoes and peppers are still hanging on and with this little warm weather spell we’re getting I’m optimistic for one more round before the cold and wet shuts them down. We may have enough winter squash for one more distribution of random types but I’ll have to recheck the numbers after our losses last weekend. Whatever odd number we have will go on the farm stand.
