Thirteenth Summer Share

Lettuce, sweet pepper, beets with greens, tomatoes, shallots, chard and parsley. Thursday got beets and chard last week so we’ll have a different green, probably kale and no roots. This is our first time giving out the French Grey shallots so if you haven’t had them before check out our last post where I went into a bit more detail on them. On the farm stand we’ve been having some eggplant, melons, and the last of the sauce tomatoes and basil.

Today in the field we mostly worked on hoeing the radicchio for this fall and winter and the sweet peppers. Weed pressure is high, as it’s been all year, but the radicchio seems to be doing well so far despite it and we’re finally getting more peppers to ripen.

This is the final summer share of this year and next week our fall season starts. It’s been a tricky summer on the farm, more crop failures than I can every remember seeing in one season and not for any one apparent reason but probably as a result of a whole series of smaller issues that just added up and that we should be able to address next year (to some extent) – pests eating seedlings in the greenhouse, heat waves at odd times, a huge weed seed bank from last season, labor shortages at some key moments, pests eating seedlings in the field… Never a dull moment on the farm, but things do seem to be settling out a bit and the fall and winter are a bit easier just because all of the growing slows down, also meaning the rush to get some things done slows down. The final planting push for cover crops and overwintering crops will happen in then next few weeks and then it’s all harvest and clean up for the rest of the year!
