Twelfth Summer Share

Celery, lettuce, yellow onions, sweet peppers, collards, tomatoes. Two heads of lettuce in yesterday’s share – Blushed Butter Oak and Brown Goldring Romaine – Thursday will probably see different lettuces, as well as chard instead of collards. Fingers crossed that the warm weather predicted for later this week helps speed up tomato and pepper ripening as they’re both painfully slow right now with the cooler night time temps we’ve been getting. Some warm weather will also help the melons we’ve had a few of on the farm stand, as well as the eggplant we’re hoping to get for the stand. The shares are a bit smaller than planned for right now but hopefully for folks looking to fill out the shares you’re taking advantage of what we have on the farm stand, your farm stand credits and the fact that all purchases on the farm stand a really just a suggested price. In the you pick the tomatillos and ground cherries are ready now, and we’re slowly making the padron and hot peppers more accessible by learning weeds. There are still lots of cherry tomatoes out there, too (when you’re picking if you want to help the plants, pick off any split or damaged fruit you find and just drop it on the ground – this will encourage more fruiting – and pro-tip, pick the fruit just slightly under-ripe if you’re not going to eat it right away and it’ll ripen fully on your kitchen counter in a day or two).

In the field yesterday we were able to cover some more beds to protect them from whatever has been eating the leaves, take out the biggest weeds in the leeks to give them a bit more light and air, and pick a bunch of dry beans which we hope to have available on the farm stand later this fall after we have time to shell them (if you want some to shell yourself let me know and I can send you the variety list, quantities available and suggested price).

Next week is the last week of summer. Fall shares will start the week after with the A schedule folks, and then the week after that with the B schedule. We still have a few spots left for B schedule sign ups, A is sold out. I’ll be sending out details on picking up the first fall shares later next week.
