11th CSA Share Predictions

We’re in a bit of a hole right now on the farm with the way the season has shaped up so expect a small share. Easy prediction is that we’ll have lettuce and chard and some tomatoes on Monday. Thursday got chard yesterday so we’ll try for a different green this coming Thursday. Add shallots into that mix, and we might have a few more sweet peppers coming on – the shallots having matured a bit early and the peppers still taking their time to mature. We were hoping to have carrots, cucumbers and summer squash and we might still eke out a bit more cucumber and summer squash, but the carrots were lost to a combination of weeds and pests. After having a bumper crop of carrots in the winter our summer plantings have all been miserable failures, and this year’s conditions have meant the cucumbers and summer squash have tailed off earlier than usual. A couple of crops that will probably show up on the farm stand, as we have limited quantities are charentais melons and red beets. There are still lots of cherry tomatoes, herbs and a few padron peppers in the you pick section to help fill out your shares. Times like this on the farm make me extra grateful for the continued support of our CSA members who have stuck with us for many years and the direct connection model which is set up explicitly to help growers weather the inevitable ups and downs of farming and continue to feed the community for the long term.

News of the day yesterday was rain! We got about a half inch which was great for washing off the layers of dust that have accumulated with all the hot, dry weather we’ve had. It would have been nicer if it hadn’t come on a Thursday, but even with the rain we were able to get some weeding done, and it just meant a bit of extra work cleaning up the harvested vegetables. Fingers crossed for a warm, dry end to summer and start of fall now to help with the coming harvests and the last remaining plantings.
