The shares continue to be much smaller than I’d like, but as always they’re a reflection of where we are in the season. Romano beans, parsley, lemon cucumber, tomatoes, pepper, red onions, chard and summer squash (not pictured). Tomatoes came on strong today and again we have a good sized share of romano beans. Today is getting chard, as did last Thursday, and Thursday and next Monday will probably see kale before lettuce returns. Our fall parsley is looking nice so we put a small bunch in. The sweet peppers are definitely behind this year as they got off to a very slow start. We needed to thin fruit from the plants so there’s a small gypsy pepper in most shares and a few folks got a Jimmy Nardello, just little teaser really. The cucumbers and summer squash, which were both waning a bit anyway, seem to have not enjoyed the heat so just a lemon cucumber and choice of summer squash in the shares today. This may be the final week for cucumbers in the share unless they unexpected bounce back, and summer squash isn’t far behind.
Most of the day was taken up with harvest and irrigation and training in the new crew. We did get a bit of weeding done though, and should have time for a bit more on Thursday. Once again this year the grasses are our worst weed, and they’re setting prolific seed which means we’ll continue to have to deal with them next year, too. Maybe I’m just not remembering, and maybe the smoky morning and dry grass seed was contributing but I can’t ever remember an August feeling this dry and dusty. I don’t really want it to start raining too soon as we have a lot of dry beans and dry corn to still mature, but it might be nice to get a little moisture for the end of summer before settling into an extended warm, dry fall (wishful thinking!?)
