Basil, tomatoes, summer squash, potatoes, cucumbers, romano beans and lettuce. Big news today was the heat! The crew did great and most of the veggies seem to be faring ok.
Because of the heat wave we lost a little more lettuce to bolting in the field and what we have remaining is very small, mostly too small to harvest. Thursday may or may not get lettuce in their shares at all depending on how hard the heat hits. We might be able to sub a different green, stay tuned… Continuing with the crop failures, the yield on our remaining potatoes was a fraction of what it should have been, likely due to disease pressure that may have come in on the seed potatoes. The resulting potatoes aren’t pretty but hopefully you’ll still enjoy them. The yellow one is German Butterball and the red is Amarosa, two of my all time favorites.
In better news, the slicing tomatoes seem like they’re starting to ripen nicely and the saladettes seem to always do pretty well. Romano beans are finally producing, too so we were able to give out a slightly larger share of those today. Cherry tomatoes in the the you pick look great so definitely take advantage.
In general right now the CSA shares are a good bit smaller than we planned and hoped for. There are numerous compounding reasons for that, too many to list here. Two of our typical staple crops, lettuce and carrots, have been particularly hard hit. Many of the crops seem to be impacted in one way or another, although there are others more minor ones that are doing better this year than I’ve seen them do in a long time – the popcorn looks really good right now! As always we’re doing our best to get as many veggies in the share as possible and to ensure that there’ll also be veggies for the fall and winter months. We’re super grateful for our CSA members who continue to support the farm and make it possible for us to keep things going even through tricky months!
