This coming week is the first week of our summer CSA season. I just added four more shares for Monday so if you want one sign up now! If you know someone who still might want one let them know. Here’s my best guess at what will be in the first share: beets, carrots, fennel, Favas, lettuce, chard, salad turnips. There’s a chance we’ll also have summer squash, or if we don’t have enough we’ll put that on the farm stand. The beets and carrots will probably be small, it’s a bit tough to tell before we actually start digging. Usually I try not to give chard on the same week that we have beet greens, so it’s possible we’ll sub kale instead – we do need to get the chard out to replant that bed though so we’ll make that call on Monday. We should also have collard greens on the farm stand, again a bed that we need to clear to replant.
The fields are looking really good right now. There’s lots that needs to be done, but we haven’t gotten completely buried with delayed tasks, yet, and the weather has been pretty good for most of the crops in the field. There’s a ton of residual weed pressure from last year when we did a terrible job of keeping on top of the weeds in quite a few spots – that wet cold spring didn’t do us any favors, especially with the annual grasses. The weather looks like it’s going to be pretty favorable for the next week plus – should be good for both getting work done and crop growth!
